In cities across America Jewish residents are making quiet calculations they did not make five years ago. Whether to wear a Star of David outside their clothing. Whether to put a mezuzah on a visible doorpost. Whether to speak Hebrew in public. Whether to let their children wear anything that identifies them as Jewish at school.

The rise in antisemitic incidents since October 7 has been documented and significant. For many Jewish Americans the question of how openly to live their identity has become a daily consideration in ways that feel genuinely new.

Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner made a different calculation. His city would be loudly and specifically supportive of its Jewish residents. Legislation. Community programs. Public statements that left no ambiguity about where the city stood.

This conversation is about what that decision looks like in practice and what other cities might learn from it.
